There's been a handful of demo tapes I've received this year that have kicked my ass, and this one is no exception to that rule. Mefitic are an Italian band that play black/death metal that would be somewhat comparable to Necros Christos and Grave Miasma - very old school sound and dark, so obviously something I'm going to drool over. This is the first offering from Edmonton death/black metal maniacs Begrime Exemious. The lineup here is slightly different than more recent material, with more bizarre riffs thrown into the mix. Tracks like "Path of the Goat" have been fan favourites ever since the release of this demo. The 2006 demo has been sold out for a while, so grab it here without shame.

Timeghoul were a band from Missouri that played a bizarre and very twisted brand of death metal. Imagine Craig Pillard era Incantation's low end, Gorguts' technical bizareness, and Order From Chaos' occult feel, and Timeghoul sits somewhere in there. Both of their demos are included in this download.

During the boom of Swedish death metal bands in the late 80's/early 90's, Nirvana 2002 was one band that stood out from the crowd. Their guitar tone and influences may have been in line with many of their peers, but Nirvana 2002 had a unique aura about them that unfortunately was only captured on a few demo tapes. This is the best out of their demo material. Although it will soon be available on a compilation thanks to Relapse, it's worth just checking these 3 songs out.

Right after their work with Morbid Angel's 1986 recording, "Abominations of Desolation", Mike Browning and Sterling von Scarborough resurfaced in Incubus. The band basically released this demo and fizzled out, with Browning putting his time into Nocturnus immediately after. The music here is raw, fast, and has a pretty unique sense of riffing to it. The vocals are especially gruff, and just add to the overall power of these songs.

Nepenthe hail from Kansas City, Missouri, and play bizarre and demented death metal. This demo is their first offering in their very limited discography, and features 3 original tracks plus a live track I was able to find as well. Alex Blume (who more recently appears in Ares Kingdom) plays bass in this band. Like fellow Kansas City death metal freaks Order From Chaos, Nepenthe strives on originality, and the maniac vocals here certainly help with that fact.
