Haggatha - Haggatha LP (2010)

2010, Killbomb

1. Circle of Salt

2. Hog Tied

3. These Grey Days

4. Eremozoic

5. Gulag

6. Acquiesce

7. An Old Way Begins Again

From Vancouver, Canada, Haggatha's first LP offers a truly heavy landscape of slow, downtuned riffs. After being blown away by their live performance and previously released seven inch, I had to hear this full length. Truly a band that deserves some attention. Order the LP if you like this!

Cygnus - Heresy of the Stargazer

2011, Dark Descent Records

Cygnus was formed by members of various Edmonton metal/hardcore bands to unite their visions of slow heavy music and the usage of copious amounts of marijuana. This demo is the result of that collaboration. Featuring 6 tracks, Cygnus weaves together their influences from Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, and Grief to make their spaced out brand of sludge Available on Dark Descent Records on green cassette tape, limited to 250 copies. For those without tape decks, I present a rip.

8.Target Planet02:22
9.Revenge of the Corpse02:16
10.Welcome to N.J.03:52
11.Poltergeist02:37

Nokturnel is an American death metal band from the early 90's that often gets over looked. Formed by Tom Stevens after his former band Savage Death (one of the earlier pioneers of death metal) bit the dust, Nokturnel blends high speeds with technical riffs to create some really fucking savage songwriting. It reminds me of the first Deceased album, as it's full of Voivod-esque riffs and ridiculously fast drumming. Check this out, any fan of early 90's death metal will dig this.

25.Sometimes Dead Is Better02:58

In the year 2000, Swedish grindcore masters Nasum released their second album, "Human 2.0". Between their debut and this album, Nasum was at the peak of their game - writing really fucking brutal songs with heavy riffs and high velocity drumming. This is probably their heaviest sounding album, but it's got hints of melody and groove scattered throughout to hook you in. Whether you like classic grindcore like Napalm Death and Terrorizer, or you like Swedish d-beat like Wolfpack and Skitsystem, this record will satisfy your tastes.

Deathspell Omega - Paracletus (2010)

2010, Season of Mist

1. Epiklesis I 01:42
2. Wings of Predation 03:43
3. Abscission 06:07
4. Dearth 03:47
5. Phosphene 07:03
6. Epiklesis II 03:06
7. Malconfort 04:57
8. Have you Beheld the Fevers? 02:59
9. Devouring Famine 05:09
10. Apokatastasis Pantôn 04:01

Finally, the third installment of this French band's trilogy has arrived! Fans of Deathspell Omega will not be disappointed - we get a lot of the cool experimental chords heard on "Fas", as well as the chaotic blasting parts heard on SMRC. For those who haven't heard Deathspell Omega before, they are in for a treat. Black metal at heart, but with a sense for writing outside the box, Deathspell Omega crafts very eerie sounding songs full of dynamics and some pretty heavy lyrics to boot. One of my favourites from 2010.

The Chasm - Farseeing The Paranormal Abysm (2009)

2009, Lux Inframundis

1.Entering a Superior Dimension08:23
2.Callous Spectre/Vehement Opposition08:27
3.Fiery Rebirth06:52
4.Farseeing...01:45
5.Structure of the Seance06:56
6.Vault to the Voyage11:13
7.The Promised Ravage06:38
8.The Mission/Arrival to Hopeless Shores (Calling The Paranormal Abysm)11:52

Most bands tend to lose direction and the original vision they had after three or so records. The Chasm, on the other hand, is one of those bands that has always stayed true to their sound, while at the same time writing music that's loaded with creative riffs, complex arrangements, and blistering speed. This is the band's seventh album, and in all honesty, I haven't stopped listening to it since I received it in the mail. Everything about this album is just pure metal - the riffs are pretty thrashy and quick with some pretty impressive finger work thrown throughout, not to mention some pretty bad ass solos. Neveyr heard The Chasm before? This is as good a place to start as any. The production is pretty clean without being polished, it sounds nice and big without anything being overpowering. Half the songs don't even have lyrics, but it doesn't even matter, the music says everything it needs too.

Autopsy - Acts of the Unspeakable (1992)

1992, Peaceville

1.Meat02:37
2.Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium02:11
3.Your Rotting Face03:55
4.Blackness Within01:45
5.An Act of the Unspeakable02:25
6.Frozen With Fear00:31
7.Spinal Extractions00:21
8.Death Twitch02:13
9.Skullptures02:32
10.Pus / Rot04:01
11.Battery Acid Enema01:47
12.Lobotomized00:51
13.Funereality02:53
14.Tortured Moans of Agony00:46
15.Ugliness and Secretions01:09
16.Orgy in Excrements01:57
17.Voices02:07
18.Walls of the Coffin01:19

The third Autopsy album sees the band playing more with shorter song lengths and punkier influences in their doomy death metal. This album, like "Shitfun", has some of their most disturbing lyrical content, and much like that album, gets overlooked by many fans. Highly recommended death metal from the masters!

18.Bathe in Fire01:42
19.Bowel Ripper01:11
20.Burnt to a Fuck03:46
21.Excremental Ecstasy03:16

Everyone always talks about the first two Autopsy full lengths, and often over look the last two the band put out before they originally broke up. Here we have their forth, and filthiest, album - "Shitfun". Here we see Autopsy wear their punk influences on their sleeve more than ever, while still retaining their death metal core with some doomy parts. Lyrically, this is probably the most disturbing Autopsy record, themed around sex, sadism, perversions, and death. Do not overlook this record! Personally, I feel Autopsy has never done a bad record, and this is no exception. Hail to one of the greatest death metal bands of all time!
